Baby Naming Tips and Trends

On the face of it, naming your baby seems pretty straightforward, but sometimes it’s not easy to come up with a name you and your partner can agree on. Add to that the myriad of other input you get from well meaning family, friends and coworkers, as well of the uncertainty of the gender, and the task can seem pretty daunting!

There are many approaches to naming your new baby. You could honor a family member or other relatively that you love, choose a name with family heritage or pick one associated with your faith. Some parents go so far as to name their baby after a song, their favorite celebrity or athlete, or even a favorite vacation spot.

Of course you’ll need to pick something you and your partner can agree on. While he may think Lisa is the perfect name for your girl, you may have an unexplained visceral reaction to it because Lisa was the name of your classmate in 3rd grade that you couldn’t stand- go figure!

Celebrity baby names are a popular choice for the rest of us. In fact, soap opera characters have launched otherwise unknown names to the heights of popularity. Brandon and Emma, two of the most popular names today, are both characters in popular television shows.

Some parents look at baby name lists (such as www.babynamesindex.com) to help them decide. Baby name lists like popular baby names, celebrity baby names or top 100 baby names can help parents choose. Among the most popular baby names for babies today are Emma, Emily, Madison, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Ethan and Ryan.

Another thing to consider is that you shouldn’t just pick baby girl names or baby boy names, but a name that will fit as a teenager and adult. “Moon” Zappa may have been cute in the heyday of the 1960’s culture, but does it really fit someone who is trying to gain upward mobility today?

Finally, try to take into account how it looks and sounds with his middle name and surname. Think how you would like the name if it was yours. And take into account what the initials will spell. Whatever you do, come up with a short list of possibilities that you can discuss with your partner, and of course you can use family and friends as a sounding board. But, remember it is all down to personal choice. And as Shakespeare once said, “A rose by any other name is still a rose!”
