Potty training is an activity that marks a major developmental milestone in your baby’s life. But don't rush potty training. Instead, wait until your child is ready and be patient when the unavoidable accidents occur. Normally, a child is ready to be potty trained at approximately 2 ½ years. You will know that a child is ready when they can recognize a bowel movement (unfortunately for the parents, this usually happens after the bowel movement!) But this recognition indicates that your toddler is beginning to recognize and control these movements. Investing in a baby toilet is a good idea so that your toddler can begin to go the bathroom by themselves. After a month or so they will tell you when they need to go and will get pretty good at it! Sleeping through the night without an accident takes a bit longer, especially if baby goes to sleep just after drinking a bottle of milk. So your best bet is to keep your baby in overnight type diapers until they learn how to stay dry for the entire night. Even when this happens, be prepared for an occasional accident. Some people believe that girls get ready to potty train before boys, but don't worry about this as they all get there when they are ready. |
