Public vs. Private Schooling

One of the things you’ll need to think about once your child reaches school age is whether to send her to a private or public school. There are pros and cons to each which need to be evaluated. For example, benefits of public schools include the fact that they are free, normally nearby and your kids friends from the neighborhood would typically be attending, creating a strong bond for your kids. Private schools, on the other hand, offer strict academic standards and in most cases enhanced subject matter (such as foreign language development and advanced science topics) not available in the public schools. But there are downsides to private schools including their high expense and what some perceive as a somewhat rigid, structured environment. Like all things in life, there is probably some truth to both these arguments.

Some children thrive in a rich academic environment and can absorb knowledge like a sponge. For these children, private schools may help quench their appetitive for learning. Other children learn differently in the sense that too much structure can stifle their creativity. But one truism is that school, like most anything in life, is one of those things where you get out what you put into it. There are myriad examples of students from both public and private schools that have succeeded in life due to their academic background, hard work, perseverance and self discipline. The good news that is that whatever you decide, if you work with your child to supplement their schooling experience with positive reinforcement, stress the importance of academics with your child, use homework time as a positive learning tool and provide a loving home environment, your child can succeed in either public or private settings.
