Kids with special needs are those that need a little extra help because of a medical, emotional or learning challenge. To cope with these challenges, these children may need regular medicine, therapy or extra help in school. Special needs kids may have physical challenges where they need to use a wheelchair or brace for mobility. Others may have a hearing, speech or vision impairment. A child with an illness such as diabetes, or cerebral palsy might need medicine or other help to successfully integrate with children and live their life. Finally, some children have learning disabilities such as autism or Down Syndrome. Life continues to change for the better for special needs children. First of all, there is a better understanding of the causes and nature of the problem, which has lead to better understanding and less of a social stigma. Often times, issues can be detected in utero, so that parents have advanced notification of potential issues and can react or prepare in advance. In addition, the availability of modern medicines has helped improve the life of certain illnesses such as diabetes, which can now be successfully managed. Lighter, more flexible prosthetics as well as modern wheelchairs and braces have advanced greatly to help those with mobility impairments. In conjunction with a greater emphasis on accommodations (such as wheelchair ramps or elevators at schools and public buildings as well as special lifting buses), these changes mean that many are being more successfully integrated than ever before. Even better medial devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants are helping hard of hearing children to live more successful lives. Sometimes you may not even notice that the child has a special need unless you know them very well. While it is clear that special needs kids can and do live very successful lives, depending on the nature of the situation, certain tasks that we do regularly undetake can be a bit more challenging for them. Sometimes they may have more trouble making friends, especially if other kids tease hem. So how can we help these children? Listening and being their friends can go a long way in helping the child cope. It's also important to support these children without being overly helpful when no help is needed so that they can become independent as they can be. And through the help of parents, doctors, nurses, therapists, teachers, and others, we can help these kids become as independent as possible. |
